FIlm Screening: Change the Subject

Change the Subject shares the story of a group of college students committed to advancing and promoting the rights and dignity of undocumented peoples in the U.S. Upon seeing the "illegal alien" as a subject heading, these students questioned why this offensive word appeared in the library's catalog.  This led to a collaborative effort with librarians to petition the Library of Congress to change this subject heading at a national level. Their advocacy took them all the way from the university library help desk to the halls of Congress, showing how an instance of campus activism entered the national spotlight, and how the cataloging term of "illegal alien" became a flashpoint in the immigration debate on Capitol Hill. This film documents their experiences.
